April 7, 1965, June
15, 1966, a recommendation from the committee was approved to consider a
bond issue to purchase property in Heritage colony subdivision.
On July 13, 1966, a recommendation was approved to float a bond
issue and purchase 12 lots in Heritage Colony subdivision. The trustees
were authorized to enter into and sign such contracts necessary to
secure and purchase the property from Sneed Brothers in Heritage Colony
at the intersection of On
September 7, 1966, it was recommended and approved that the church use
the property as security to float a $70,000 bond issue to acquire enough
money to purchase the property, erect a building, and equip the building
for Worship services. On
September 24, 1967, groundbreaking services were held, with Dr. Mark
Harris and Bro. Gordon Crocker, Superintendent of Missions
participating. The first
footings were poured on November 26, 1967; the building was completed
and dedication was on May 5, 1968. In
between the groundbreaking and dedication, much time, labor, tears, and
toil by dedicated men, women and young people went into the building of
this edifice for the glory of God and the proclamation of his word. Area
of property: 4.5 acres; Cost of property: $39,500; Cost of building:
$35,000; Value of building: $60,000 ($25,000 saved through the gifts of
labor and love of God’s people). February
11, 1968, the mission was named Crestview Baptist Church and the
dedication day was May 5, 1968. Crestview
Baptist experienced very rapid growth over the next decade; membership
growth required additional building to be built for classrooms, meeting
areas, and a cafeteria/fellowship hall. The growth continued and
in 1985 another building program provided additional classroom space.
This growth era was followed with a gradual decline in membership as
families moved to more suburban areas of the city. This transition
continued until about 30 families remained active in church. This
decline required full time personnel to revert to part-time workers
and some administrative
duties had to be transferred to member volunteers. The small
church membership remained stable for a few years until; John Crestview
is now debt-free and shares some excess building space with a sister

August 29, 1915, what was then know as the New South Memphis Baptist
Church was organized with 21 members, with it’s location on the corner
of Florida at McKellar Avenue. Within two years the membership
increased to 300. The
