Crestview Baptist Church

On April 7, 1965, Mallory Heights Baptist Church elected a mission’s committee to consider property in Balmoral subdivision for an extension of the church, but no decision was made.

June 15, 1966, a recommendation from the committee was approved to consider a bond issue to purchase property in Heritage colony subdivision.   On July 13, 1966, a recommendation was approved to float a bond issue and purchase 12 lots in Heritage Colony subdivision. The trustees were authorized to enter into and sign such contracts necessary to secure and purchase the property from Sneed Brothers in Heritage Colony at the intersection of Winchester and Clarke Road .

On September 7, 1966, it was recommended and approved that the church use the property as security to float a $70,000 bond issue to acquire enough money to purchase the property, erect a building, and equip the building for Worship services.

On September 24, 1967, groundbreaking services were held, with Dr. Mark Harris and Bro. Gordon Crocker, Superintendent of Missions participating.  The first footings were poured on November 26, 1967; the building was completed and dedication was on May 5, 1968.  In between the groundbreaking and dedication, much time, labor, tears, and toil by dedicated men, women and young people went into the building of this edifice for the glory of God and the proclamation of his word.

Area of property: 4.5 acres; Cost of property: $39,500; Cost of building: $35,000; Value of building: $60,000 ($25,000 saved through the gifts of labor and love of God’s people).

February 11, 1968, the mission was named Crestview Baptist Church and the dedication day was May 5, 1968.

Crestview Baptist experienced very rapid growth over the next decade; membership growth required additional building to be built for classrooms, meeting areas, and a cafeteria/fellowship hall.  The growth continued and in 1985 another building program provided additional classroom space.  This growth era was followed with a gradual decline in membership as families moved to more suburban areas of the city.  This transition continued until about 30 families remained active in church.  This decline required full time personnel to revert to part-time workers and some administrative duties had to be transferred to member volunteers.  The small church membership remained stable for a few years until; John Harrison became the pastor in December 1996.  Since that time the church has experience a slow membership increase that now includes about 50 families.

Crestview is now debt-free and shares some excess building space with a sister church.  The Crestview Day School program is operated by an outside agency occupying church classroom and administrative space during weekdays.

Crestview Baptist Church philosophy is to service the Fox Meadows residents and surrounding communities in spiritual growth and other spiritual needs that may arise.  Church services now include; Worship Services, Music Ministry, Sunday school, Senior Adults, Youth Program, Wedding Ministry, Nursery and Pre-School Programs.

On August 29, 1915, what was then know as the New South Memphis Baptist Church was organized with 21 members, with it’s location on the corner of Florida at McKellar Avenue.  Within two years the membership increased to 300.

The membership then purchased lots on the corner of Frank at Florida Street and erected a frame building, which they occupied until it burned.  In 1924 work was begun on a new church building, and with the donation of work by the men of the church, the basement was completed, which was free of debt.  Services were held there in this basement until March 1950, when the second floor and sanctuary were completed.  Later the educational and junior buildings were added for additional Sunday School and Training Union facilities.

In 1939, the membership adopted the name of Mallory Heights Baptist Church .  It continued to grow until the membership reached about 800.  Prior to the opening of Crestview Baptist Church , Mallory Heights had facilities valued well in excess of $275,000.
