Discipleship More Information
One of the best ways to encourage spiritual growth is through intentional discipleship. Jesus’ model for training and encouraging spiritual growth was to take twelve men and spend three years together. The twelve heard him teach, were witnesses to miracles, and experienced the privilege of daily discussions with him. They were also given opportunities to stretch their wings by experimenting with practicing ministry on their own. In 2 Timothy 2:2 Paul encouraged Timothy to make this same kind of personal, reproducible investment to train others, “what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust to faithful men who will be able to teach others also”(ESV). Jesus was clear when he gave the great commission. We are to “make disciples”, not simply make converts.

Discipleship is a long-term (1 year minimum), intentional relationship between an older and younger believer designed to help train the younger believer to be a fully devoted follower of Christ.
