America's 250th Anniversary (By Thomas Hill)

This Saturday, July 4, will mark the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America. As you enjoy hot dogs, watermelons, and fireworks, remember to thank the Lord for our country and its many blessings.

Scripture reminds us that our national citizenship has been providentially determined by God: “He made from one man every nation of mankind to live on all the face of the earth, having determined allotted periods and the boundaries of their dwelling place” (Acts 17:26). In other words, our homeland in this world was not arbitrary; it was divinely ordained. Most Crestview members are American citizens. So, appreciate that the blessings and freedoms we enjoy in our country are ultimately derived from the Lord.

Be glad for the excellent things our nation has accomplished. It seems clear to me that no country on earth has done more to promote freedom and liberty within our borders and across the world. To be sure, the historical record has its stains, and our nation has not always lived up to its ideals, but America has done much good in the world.

Value the ways we and others have contributed to our country’s good: military service, public service, first response, education, public works, and more. The Lord has enabled us to take part in our nation as citizens and good neighbors. Such service is honorable.

Finally, be grateful to live in a land that prioritizes religious liberty. The State and church remain separate, as they should be. Churches can freely assemble and pursue their divine purposes without threat of government interference. Across history, many fellow Christians have not enjoyed such liberty.

As America’s 250th Anniversary is celebrated this week, take the opportunity to thank the Lord. This Sunday, we will worship the Lord as we do each Lord’s Day, with our eyes focused on him and his word. As a special addition to our service, we plan to include an extended prayer of gratitude for America. We will offer thanks, entreat God’s favor, and intercede for our country and its citizens. I look forward to gathering with you this Sunday!

For His Glory,

Pastor Thomas
